What is a Moonguard? The short answer is it's a fancy name for our bouncers and security. While the majority of their duties will pertain to such a role, the way in which a Moonguard should view them is slightly different, as will be elaborated on later.
Who can be a Moonguard? Technically any male or female of any race can qualify. Members of the more physically imposing races may be better suited to the job, as are characters who have a martial background, particularly those who use more discreet weapons, such as Pugilists and Rogues; while we're here to keep the girls (and the fellas too!) safe from harm, we're also not looking to make the patrons uncomfortable. A lap dance loses its appeal with a burly Roegadyn shouldering a great axe standing just off to the side.
This isn't to say a Lalafell Thaumaturge can't be a Moonguard; what's most important is the attitude in approaching the position. What are the responsibilities of a Moonguard? As stated a bit early, the Moonguards are there to keep the rest of the Keeper's Kiss safe. Being present for performance nights to confiscate weapons (no patrons are allowed weaponry in the private rooms or the performance area of the establishment, Menphina's Respite), escorting courtesans to a client's residence or being nearby when they're scouting for prospective clients, or simply being on call for when a situation gets out of hand (and even then, unless it's glaringly obvious that intervention is required, interfering is usually only done so at the courtesan's request; some like to handle a rowdy client on their own).
Ultimately, much of a Moonguard's active "on-duty" time is spent in the background, adding a touch of atmosphere and legitimacy to the establishment, but not being directly involved in the performances. The patrons aren't coming to see the security team, after all, they're there for the boobies and butts. A good Moonguard makes their presence known but not felt, and at times it can feel like a fairly thankless position; if you like the limelight, you're better off as a courtesan or performer. Be assured it's anything but that; the rest of the Keeper's Kiss knows we're the unsung heroes that helps prop up the more glamorous aspects of the business, and they all show their appreciation in their own way. What makes for good Moonguard etiquette? A good Moonguard is one who remembers what the job is; keeping the others safe. The entertainers and courtesans who work at Menphina's Respite aren't just a bunch of dancer and whores to babysit. They're your charges, your superiors, and your family.
The ladies and fellas who tend to the customers work a potentially dangerous line of work; abuse both physical and emotional is an unfortunate reality of the job, and it's important that they have someone they feel like they can come to when they're in trouble. If you're just signing on as a Moonguard because you think it'll get you an easy-in with a bunch of pretty catgirls and snakeladies, you won't be working at Menphina's Respite for long.
Don't be deterred; this isn't to say you're not supposed to socialize with the softer members of the Keeper's Kiss. It's easy for a Moonguard to become popular with the people they look after, and one should feel free to take advantage of this. Just always remember, the first and foremost priority is the well-being of the others.
How you go about doing this is largely up to how your character would handle such things. Whether polite or crass, chatty or curt, so long as Moonguard does the job without being too obtrusive (let the girls be the showstoppers) and doing it efficiently (again, the patrons are here for the girls, not to be strip-searched and patted down… at least not by us), then they're doing the job right.
